A New Brunswick man has been charged with sexual assault and a Halifax man faces charges related to an assault with a knife in two separate incidents against women overnight Sunday in Halifax.

Just after 8 p.m., police were called to an address on Connor Lane in the north end after a woman reported that a man she did not know threatened her with a knife as she waited in the common area of an apartment building.

The investigation led to the arrest of a 33-year-old Halifax man at his residence. He will appear in court Tuesday on charges of assault with a weapon, uttering threats and possession of a dangerous weapon.

Shortly before 3 a.m. Monday, police responded to a report of a sexual assault in the 5400 block of Spring Garden Road. A woman who was walking in the area told police she was being closely followed by a stranger. When she turned around, she saw the man masturbating. He immediately lunged at her, "sexually assaulting her over her clothing," police said in a news release. When the woman yelled, the man ran away.

Police searched the area and arrested a 29-year-old New Brunswick man nearby "after a foot pursuit behind the same Provincial Court house he will be appearing in on Tuesday to face charges of sexual assault," police noted in the release.
