Eleven-time champion David MacLennan expected Bryan Hipson to be his main competition on Sunday and he was right.
Yarmouth's Hipson won the Johnny Miles Marathon in New Glasgow, posting a championship time of 2:52:37.
MacLennan, a Scotsburn native and a local racing legend, ran a 2:53:05 for second. MacLennan has been dealing with a bad hamstring that has limited his training.
Herbie Sakalauskas of Sydney River placed third in 2:56:45. The top three were the only runners to break three hours.
Stellarton's David Hood (3:10:14), Cow Bay's Christopher Oss (3:12:20) and Andrew Clarey of Margaree Forks (3:16:45) were the next three to cross. The top six all made the qualifying standard for the 2018 Boston Marathon.
Timberlea's Nancy Alexander (3:28:27), Hubley's Petra Spires (3:31:37) and Fredericton's Sarah Cleveland (3:36:03) were the top three women finishers.
Antigonish's Donald Rasmussen won the half-marathon in 1:18:47. Halifax's Morag McDonah topped the women in 1:37:06.
